The schedule for the upcoming 2012 Poet baseball season was released earlier this week by baseball Head Coach Mike Rizzo.

The 2012 season opens up on Friday, Feb. 3 as the Poets travel to take on Chapman starting at 4:30 p.m. and then return to Memorial Stadium the following day for their doubleheader home opener also against Chapman starting at 11 am.

The Purple and Gold then open up SCIAC play at home against the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehends on Friday, Feb. 10 followed by an exhibition game against British Columbia on Wednesday, Feb. 22.

The Poets also travel to Arizona from Feb. 17-19 where they will take on Whitman, Sul Ross State University, McMurry University and Pacific Lutheran.

Softball Head Coach Shelley Whitaker recently announced the schedule for the upcoming 2012 season and looks to continue Whittier’s run of four consecutive seasons of making it to the post season.

The Poets went 23-19, 11-13 in SCIAC, in 2011 while having senior infielder Molly Yriarte, junior outfielder Nikki Mendoza and junior infielder Brenda Thompson named to the ALL-SCIAC team.

The Lady Poets open their season on Tuesday, Feb. 7 with a doubleheader against Hope International beginning at 1 p.m. and then face conference rivals La Verne and Redlands on Saturday and Sunday Feb. 11 and 19 to begin conference play.
Eight of their 16 non-conference games will be played at Palmer Field, including matchups against Staten Island, Webster and Hamline University.

The Poets fell 66-57 to the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday, Jan. 25 in a battle of one-loss teams in SCIAC. The Poets shot 55.5 percent from the free-throw line with nine misses, a differential that ended up costing them the game. The two teams came into the contest in a three way tie for first place in the league with Claremont Mckenna, whom the Poets defeated in double-overtime in their previous home game.

Since their arrival to California in 2008, I have heard mixed reviews about the burger joint named Five Guys, but have kept my distance out of loyalty to their esteemed rival, In-N-Out Burger, and the fact that a cheeseburger is $5.79 at Five Guys.

Unfortunately, curiosity got the best of my budget and this week I ventured over to Telegraph Road and Carmenita Road for my first ever Five Guys experience.

Upon walking in the door, your eyes are drawn to the posters advertising the accolades Five Guys has received lining the walls. Though it seems odd that they need to advertise to restaurant-goers who are already inside their doors, reading the menu is a simple remedy to put this out of your mind.
