As the year comes to a close, many organizations on campus are preparing for the upcoming year; some have even begun the transition. Among these organizations are the five media groups on campus: the Quaker Campus, QCTV, Kpoet, Acropolis and Video Production Studios (VPS). On Tuesday, April 3 Media Council, an organization that is made up of representatives from each media organization, student and Associated Students of Whittier College (ASWC) Senate representatives and Director of LEAP Shauna Young selected the students who will be taking over each respective media organization.

Incumbents Joe Vinatieri, Cathy Warner and Owen Newcomer took the victory in the City Council Elections this Tuesday, April 10. Elections held were city wide, with a polling place at the Shannon Center.

Lupe Sagahun-Garcia is quite pleased with herself, despite her loss this Tuesday, April 10 in the Whittier City Council elections. “Even though I lost, I still accomplished what I set out to do, which was make them actually have to campaign,”
Garcia said. “I made them work for it.”

Garcia, Nick Donovan and Craig Lebow were defeated in their campaigns for city council, along with senior Jonathan “Rex” Bartuzik’s campaign. The incumbent candidates were able to secure a victory by a 2-1 margin.

In the spirit of eco-friendliness, Campus Safety has began using E-zone cars. “The first of the two electric cars was ready for first use by Campus Safety on Sunday, April 8 but the second electric car still has some work to be done on it,” Deputy Director of Campus Safety Jose Padilla said. “The department sent a proposal for the electric cars to [Dean of Students Jeanne Ortiz] in the hope to try and reduce fossil fuel pollution on and around the campus. It is good for the campus environmen. It saves a lot of money because we don’t need fuel for these cars.”
Campus Safety received two of these cars in February but only started using them earlier this month because the cars had to be worked on which included a paint job and to register the car into the school system.

Next school year, Professor of Chemistry Devin Iimoto will replace Professor of French Andrew Wallis as the new chair of the faculty.

The chair heads the Faculty Executive Council and all faculty meetings. “We are the main representatives elected by the faculty,” Wallis said. “Our job is to give faculty opinions, work with faculty to make decisions, implement policies and coordinate all the other faculty committees.” Iimoto adds that the chair of the faculty also participates in the budget committee and faculty personnel committee, which makes decisions about faculty tenure and promotion.

College professors often publish works related to their area of study, and recently on Whittier College professor’s research to attract the attention of the Asia Times.

Whittier College Richard and Billie Deihl Distinguished Professor of History Robert B. Marks published China: Its Environment and History, his fourth individually authored book. The book recently attracted attention from the Asia Times due to its outlook on Chinese history.

“I wouldn’t say that this is the culmination of my work, because that would entail that I was done with my research, but this is an exhaustive look at Chinese environmental history,” Marks said.
