Sexual assault is not to be taken lightly. The Quaker Campus is not interested in assigning blame, and the victim should not be blamed regardless. In the spirit of journalism, the staff aims to address issues relevant to the Whittier College campus. As fellow students, it should be acknowledged that our reporters are sometimes conflicted with publishing such sensitive topics, but it is in our pledge to report the latest news and, most importantly, to spread awareness to our community.

It was brought to our attention that a case of sexual assault was reported. We openly address these issues to give a voice to and to support our peers and friends who are victims of assault.

Recently California State Assemblymember William Monning proposed Assembly Bill 1678 to keep food trucks at least 1500 feet away from elementary and secondary schools. The bill is aimed at reducing childhood obesity by denying them access to food in trucks, while still allowing them to have access to food housed in brick and mortar stores.

One major criticism of the bill points out that a medical marijuana dispensary can be within 600 feet of a school. This really seems irrelevant, but apparently these critics think food should be more accessible than medical marijuana. Food truck laws are pointless and a pathetic attempt at combating obesity, but comparing those laws to laws about medical marijuana dispensaries is unnecessary.

The rising cost of fuel has made driving ever more expensive. The average cost of regular gasoline has reached $4.33 in California, as of the printing of this issue. This has had a remarkable impact on the way Americans live their lives. Fuel consumption this month was at its lowest point since 1997, meaning that consumers are determined to curb their fuel usage as a result of these increases.

While the world is indeed more interconnected than ever before, it is imperative for the U.S. to stabilize the volatile cost of energy by developing the means for domestic production. Events outside of our control have always been a factor in commodity price levels here at home. However, we need to take steps to alleviate these effects.

The value of reading should not be lost in the dawning of our high technology world, but rather it should be embraced. Reading is the gateway to knowledge and one’s path to a higher state of being.

We never want to print incorrect information or run biased articles. However, it is difficult for us to write fair and balanced articles when people refuse to talk to us and do not give us any information.

We understand if you are worried that you may be misquoted, but you can always ask for your quotes to be read back to you. Every week we send out accuracy surveys to a portion of the people that we quote, so if you receive one please answer them. These let us gauge how accurately we are reporting information and accuracy is a reporter’s best friend.

Your life is what you make of it, and the more you shut out new experiences outside of your comfort zone, the smaller your life will be. Open your mind to new experiences though, and your horizons expand indefinitely. If you attend Whitter College, you should strive for the latter. Use this liberal arts educational experience to broaden your life view and experience things you usually would not.

Despite the love we all hold for democracy, people seem to be rather uncaring when it comes to politics. Many people make excuses, saying that it does not affect them or that they are too lazy, but voting is one of the most important things you could possibly do, and it will most definitely affect you.

If you do not vote, you have given up your ability to have a voice in the things that happen around you. If a policy is made that directly discriminates against a group you belong to, it is partly your fault because you did not vote to oppose it. Voting is, and always will be, a vital part of the democratic process.
