There was a new twist to the Orthogonian Society’s yearly Halloween dance, “O” Haunt in Club 88 that students really responded to. For the first time, the event was held outside. The Orthogonians set up in the Campus Center courtyard the night of Oct. 29, under a fiery-colored tent filled with speakers, a D.J. and a large dance floor at the side of the tent. The theme was centered on Halloween and everyone came wearing their costumes.
“Every year we try something new,” senior Orthogonian Angel Jesus-Gonzalez said. “Last year was the inflatable maze, this year we decided to have the dance outside. People really seemed to enjoy it because it was outside and it was much cooler.”
The dance began at nine and went into the early morning, ending at one. The students had a positive response to the new additions of the dance. “The best part of night was when they let the smoke off into the crowd and you could barely see everyone,” sophomore Mattie Winkler said after coming out of the jam-packed tent. “The D.J. was really good. I was pretty impressed, and the lasers were awesome too.”
The dance was complete with props that emphasized the spooky Halloween theme. Spider webs and creepy ghosts adorned the tent that contained the costumed students. “By just standing outside Wanberg where I live I could hear the sounds of the loud music and students screaming. It sounded so huge down there; definitely my favorite dance of the year so far,” sophomore Hattie Kolp said.
There was also a costume contest for the best costume, in which sophomore Jamie Manning won first place. He was dressed as a woman, complete with a wig and a birthday cake dress that had a fake chest that stuck out at least a couple feet. “The crowd really got pumped up by the contest and all the lights, and it made it so much more fun that you got to dress up in your costume and see what everyone else is wearing,” Winkler said.
However, some students disagreed. “I don’t think it was all that fun,” sophomore Davis Gerber said. “There was a ton of freshmen there and everyone was just going crazy. The tent got so packed you could barely move and when the smoke came out it was kind of suffocating. It was alright though.”
Overall, the dance received much applause towards the Orthogonian Society. “We are glad students had a blast and can’t wait for our future events,” Jesus-Gonzalez said.
